Back in 1982, The American Express "Your Next Vacation" series, took an in depth look at the tourism hotspot Haiti, to show it's card members, all the great things Haiti had to offer them on their next vacation.
It's interesting to see how many of these sites are still around, like the Oloffson hotel, The El Rancho Hotel, The Club Med N.K.A Royal Decameron Indigo Beach Resort & Spa Resort, the Citadelle, Tap Taps, Jacmel, and Cap Haitian, and have since the 2010 earthquake been restored and revitalized.

Shaving Brush Tree Overview
Pseudobombax ellipticum is a spreading, deciduous tree species in the Malvaceae family. Originating from the Americas this plant produces bottlebrush-like, scented, pink or sometimes white flowers in spring before the leaves. They open from large, cigar-shaped buds and lead onto thick, oval-shaped seed pods with a fluffy interior. They are composed of many stamens, from which pollen is produced. Palm-shaped leaves are red upon emergence, developing to orange-bronze and finally green with age. This plant can provide nice shade.

Haïti 🎼 Chérie❤️

🇭🇹 Haïti Chérie
Written and composed by Dr. Othello Bayard de Cayes and initially called "Souvenir d'Haiti," it represents the pride Haitian people feel for their country and culture. Within the Haitian community, at home and abroad, it is widely considered as a second national anthem.

Ayiti cheri pi bon peyi pase ou nanpwen
Fòk mwen te kite w pou mwen te kap konprann valè w
Fòk mwen te manke w pou m te kap apresye w

Bon briz de mè toujou soufle sou no plaj

Ou jwenn zoranj ki soti an Itali

Pou'n bwa ti kichoy pou nou jwe de ti kout zo.

Fin bay lan men se rentre lan gran pale
Se politik se movèz sitiyasyon
Sa pou nou fè se pou nou pran li kou l ye
Men bon Dye si bon la ban nou benediksyon

Kote yo prale pouki yap kouri konsa?
Yo pè pèdi tan yo pa janm di: kouman sa?

Lan peyi mwen moun pa rete avek lè
Moun pa janm prese yo koze tout lon chemen

Lè w an Ayiti ou pa janm manke tan pou soufle

An Ayiti moun pa janm dezespere

Vetiver grass 🌾 Chrysopogon zizanioides

Chrysopogon zizanioides
Vetiver Grass

Vetiver grass, is Chrysopogon zizanioides, formerly known as Vetiveria zizanioides, is a perennial grass of Andropogoneae tribe of the Poaceae family.  The Andropogoneae tribe also include the infamous corn ( Zea ), lallang ( Imperata ), lemongrass ( Cymbopogon ), Job’s tears ( Coix ), sugarcane ( Sacharum ), sorghum ( Sorghum ), etc.  Thus it is not surprise vetiver resembles lemongrass in many morphological characteristics.  All member of this tribe utilize C4 carbon fixation in photosynthesis.

In its origin Indian Subcontinent,  it is known as khus ( Hindi ), Valo ( Gujarati, Marathi ), Kuruveeru ( Telugu ), Vattiver ( Tamil ), Ramaccham ( Malyalam ), etc.

Vetiver can grow up to 1.5 meters in height and form clumps as wide.  The flowers are brownish-purple.  Its root grow vertically downward, up to 4 meter in depth.  Vetiver is frost and fire resistant, drought tolerant, and can sustain heavy grazing.

Most commercially grown vetiver are sterile.  They propagate via producing small offsets from stems.  Thus they are non-invasive and can be easily controlled.  One widely cultivated non-fertile cultigen is ‘Sunshine’, a genotype named after the town of Sunshine, Louisiana, USA.

Vetiver is widely cultivated in the tropical regions of the world.  The world’s major producers are : Haiti, India, Java and Réunion.   It is grown for many different purposes.  Its vertically grown roots make it an excellent stabilizing hedge for stream banks, terraces, and slopes.  Vetiver attracts pest, such as stem borer ( Chilo partellus ), to lay their eggs on vetiver, instead of on crop.  However, the mainly purpose for vetiver cultivation is for its essential oil distilled from its roots, to be used in perfumery industry.  The leaves, as a by-product, are feed to cattle, goats, sheep and horses.  The roots are also used in traditional medicine, as air freshener, to make ropes, and mixed with mud to make bricks for building houses, and to mark boundary lines.

Île à Vache 🐄 Haiti 🇭🇹

Île-à-Vache, Haiti's Hidden Paradise

This is Île-à-Vache (Spanish: Isla Vaca; English: Cow Island) one of Haiti's hidden jewels. It lies in the Baie de Cayes about 6.5 miles off the coast of the country's southwest peninsula, roughly between the City of Les Cayes and Pointe l'Abacou. With its sugar-white beaches, verdant mountains and valleys brimming with tropical vegetation, this beautiful island is considered one of the most peaceful and romantic get-aways in the Caribbean.

With a population of approximately 20,000 people and an untouched ecosystem, Ile-à-Vâche remains one of the rare havens that (so far) does not accommodate cars or other four-wheel motorized vehicles. At a mere 30 minutes ferry ride from the port of Les Cayes, its character hasn’t changed over the years.

The island's modern history goes back to the discovery of Hispaniola in 1492, when it was first known to be Spanish territory, until it was turned to the French after the Ryswick Treaty of 1687 that ended a war between France and Spain. Over the two centuries, it was a place for both Spanish settlers and later the French buccaneers to safely raise their cattles, thus its name Isla Vaca (Spanish) or Ile-à-Vâche in French.

In 1697, the island of Hispaniola was formally divided between Spain and France in the Treaty of Ryswick which ended the Nine Years War. France assumed control of the western half of Hispaniola and named it Saint-Domingue, which later became "The Republic Haiti", the world's first black nation to gain its independence by successfully revolting against French colonization and slavery in 1804.

It is one of the most popular tourist sites in Haiti and it has some of the best island scenery in the Caribbean. The population of the island is somewhere between 10,000-15,000 inhabitants.

There are two tourist resorts on the island, the Port Morgan and Abaka Bay.

Conan O’Brien Receives Rough Reception In Haiti

Conan O’Brien
Receives Rough Reception In Haiti
Because Of Donald Trump

“Make sure Trump knows that you guys are the ones who have bullied us, and have caused us to be in the state that we’re in.”
By Lee Moran

Conan O’Brien did not receive the warmest of welcomes during his recent trip to Haiti.

Angry locals berated the late-night talk show host and his camera crew while they were filming for the upcoming “Conan Without Borders” episode in the Caribbean country’s capital of Port-au-Prince.
“We’re being told through our interpreter that when Americans come here they only shoot the bad things, which obviously is not what we want to,” said O’Brien, in a preview clip shared online late Wednesday. O’Brien decided to visit Haiti after President Donald Trump reportedly called the country a “shithole.”

O’Brien explained to locals via a translator that the “reason I have come to Haiti is because I and a lot of Americans are angry at what President Trump said, so I wanted to come here and show positive, great beautiful things about Haiti.”

But one woman was not having it:
https://78.media.tumblr.com/2bc96f26174ae1182fac86b5de8e3c55/tumblr_inline_p346k07xUb1sfb6gb_540.gif
“Make sure Trump knows that you guys are the ones who have bullied us, and have caused us to be in the state that we’re in,” she added.

All was not lost. O’Brien ended up charming his audience with a speech in Creole - and then further bonded with locals, and the woman, with a Trump-themed joke.

Check out the clip above. “Conan In Haiti” airs Jan. 27.

Haiti Beautiful Places
2017
The beauty of Haiti not shown on television. When it comes to Haiti, the international media always go to the worst area of Haiti giving the country a bad image and scaring potential tourists. Although it is true that Haiti is very poor but there are beautiful places to go, things to do or to see.
The country is beautiful and has a lot of potential. I predict Haiti will be once again the pearl of the Caribbean in years to come. The problem with Haiti is that it lacks a caring government and investments. Haiti has been brain drained. Most rich and professional Haitians have left Haiti. Hence the Haitian diaspora lacks caring people who are willing to come back and help the country. There are 6 smaller islands belonging to Haiti. All of them with impressive beauty and pristine beaches.

I wasn’t expecting the goat in diapers.
Nor did I arrive at Circle in the Square the other night anticipating the panorama of village folk barbecuing on the beach, fishing in the lagoon and going about their daily business in a joyful preshow panorama on the theater’s lozenge-shaped stage.
Had the show never started, I would have been quite content.
But then it did, and all I can say is that after a dismal theatrical fall, in which even the highlights seemed ashen, what a delight it is to enter the world of “Once on This Island.” The musical, first seen on Broadway in 1990, opened on Sunday in a ravishing revival directed by Michael Arden.
You may not know that name, though if you saw Mr. Arden’s reformulated “Spring Awakening” for Deaf West Theater in 2015, you’d remember his signature. It’s a big signature, maximally decorative and triply underlined.
